INTRODUCTION

For years now, the dogpound in Puerto Real, near the animal shelter Kimba, has been accused of malpractice. Never before has there been proof of what really happens behind the gates of this place. But now there's finally proof and a legal suit has been filed against the dogpound.

The authorities in Cádiz, a southern province of Spain, have for many years dealt with homeless animals in a very disrespectful and dishonourable manner. Animal protectionists have tried to change the situation but have to date been powerless to change the status quo. We need your help: please sign the petition!

Just how awful the current practices are was made clear to the public at large this past week.
A few weeks ago, an Italian couple, Jo Fiori and Simone Rigui, had asked the local Spanish police for the address of a local boarding kennel. They were informed of the local dogpound as it also functions as a boarding kennel. When, three days later, the couple came to collect their dogs, they were informed that all three of their dogs had been killed. One of the bodies was in the freezer, the other two had been cremated.

ILLEGAL SUBSTANCE

The couple had an autopsy peformed on the frozen dog and evidence was found that the dog had been klled using an illegal substance that causes muscle paralysis and asphyxiation. In collaboration with an organisation in Madrid a legal suit was submitted with the Spanish police. The police raided the dogpound and found that this substance had been in use for many years; tens of thousands of animals had been killed in this manner. The case is in the process of being brought to court.

MUNICIPALITIES

As a result of the ensuing commotion many former employees have come forward. Photos and videos are now available showing piles of dogs and cats slowly dying. Eye witness accounts tell of animals being randomly injected with random doses. The municipalities have known about these practices for a long time but nevertheless continue to financially support the dogpound. They have done this in the dave of the recent law on animal welfare that clearly stipulates that municipalities are responsible for the humane care and disposal of homeless animals.

THE LAST NEWS:

Simone Rigui, the owner of the three dogs, is in the Prison of Puerto II now, because he was accused of crimes that he did not commit by two "ladies" of the city council of aggression in the manifestation against the perrera of Puerto Real (Cádiz), without any other witnesses and without evidence. Simone Rigui will be released on bail, if he or Spanish shelters can get 3000 Euros.

DEFINITIVE CHANGE

The time has come for a definitive change in the Spanish policies concerning homeless animals. Together with Spanish animal rights organisations we see this as THE moment to convince the municipalities to review their policy. This dogpound is financed by 15 municipalities in the province of Cádiz!

The problem of stray animals requires an approach worthy of a modern, developed nation. Let your voice be heard; sign the petition against the inhumane practices dealing with homeless animals and demand structural improvements in the manners of dealing with homeless animals in Spain. Pressure from foreign countries will most certainly help!

I demand not only that the authorities break all contracts existing with “la perrera de Puerto Real” but also change their policies with respect to animal welfare and in particular the way the homeless animals of the province are treated.

- citizen awareness campaigns aiming to achieve a change in attitudes towards companion animals.
- castration/sterilization campaigns.
- the application of the Andalusian Law for the Protection of Animals.
- abandonment of the indiscriminative application of euthanisation.

The Tortured Spanish Greyhounds

Spanish greyhounds, or galgos—a breed of dog native to Spain—are some of the most abused animals on the planet. Known for their stamina, galgos have been exploited for centuries, and Spain is reportedly the only country in Europe that still allows galgos to be used in hunting.

A tremendous number of hunters owning and breeding animals use cruel and savage ways to get rid of them as soon as they don’t need them anymore. That way they end their already miserable lives. Wounded, beaten, mutilated, greyhounds are left to horrifying agonies, all under the cover of so call "traditions".
The Spanish galgos suffer in squalid and inhumane breeding facilities.

Reportedly, galgos who are not hanged are often drowned in wells, injected with bleach or gasoline, shot, burned to death, or dumped on the streets after their legs are deliberately broken so that they cannot follow the cowardly hunters home.

Look at us, we will be killed soon if nobody helps us

Here we are. You can see us, the cats living at a garden that belongs to a residents' association and the neighbors want eliminate us. It will be easy for them, because the Spanish administration doesn't care about the life of the animals, a little of poison will kill us if we are hungry, and if we die, the police will not investigate the case, because we are just cats.

We are 7 cats of Barcelona. Mommy is the eldest, I and my brother are the young cats of 1 year old that is eating in the pictures. We have 3 younger brothers that were born this year. A black cat came to live with us this year and we are good friends.

Our caretakers want to save us, but all the Spanish protectors and shelters are saturated with animals, the foster houses also are full, and we have nowhere to go. Our caretakers receive threats from the neighbors everyday when they feed us and we are in danger.

If our caretakers fail in saving us before the neighbors start their hostile action, these images will be the last memories you will have of us .....

Animals in Spain - Warning : could hurt your sensibility -

Surely you know of Spain as a land of sun and beaches, but you do not know how animals are treated in this country.

The Spaniards are capricious. They buy newborn puppies for Christmas presents, and quickly abandon them for summer vacations.

The abandoned, now homeless animals are run over, mistreated or destroyed. Those that arrive at the municipal pounds will be sacrificed because nobody adopts them. The few that are rescued by private individuals, shelters or foundations do not find homes in Spain, because adult dogs and cats no longer are 'cute' and the Spaniards do not want adult animals. Therefore, Spain "exports" its unwanted adult animals to France, Germany or Holland to hope for adoption there. The animals who have the "good luck" to live in shelters before being adopted are also not safe. Many shelters undergo attacks and the slaughter of their animals by heartless people that enjoy the suffering of the animals. The attached photos that show their insensitivity were taken after an attack of this type in 2006, and the police have not yet started to investigate the case, nor will they. The assassins remain free to roam the streets, killing, torturing and mistreating more animals.

The case of the cats is specially worrisome. The abandoned cats become scared cats after cruel children mistreat them or throw stones at them. Those scared cats are difficult to rescue and they reproduce. They survive by the generosity of very few sensible people, and are exposed to poison by the neighbors, or even extermination by the city council. Ignorance is widespread in Spain, and people not only do not know what a controlled colony is, but do not want to know. When they see cats, the only thing that most people (and the city council) want to do is TO KILL THEM. The neighbors have killed half of the cats of the controlled colonies of Barcelona, and in Madrid the situation is even worse. The city council of Madrid not only fines the caretakers that feed the cats, but it also eliminates the cats. There are no laws that protect single animals, and many city councils fine an individual more to feed an abandoned animal than to actually abandon one! More unnecessary slaughter takes place in construction zones. Each new construction site entails the death of many cats that lived in the area, killed by the workers or companies hired to do so ...... In Spain, exterminators and health officials consider cats to be a type of plague which must be WIPED OUT.

The situation is desperate for the abandoned animals. The shelters are saturated with animals, the caretakers receive threats from ignorant neighbors, the foster homes are also full, and there are still thousands of animals in the street to rescue, but we do not have any place to take them ........ The administration doesn't care about the lives of the abandoned cats. The volunteers and shelters, who have no subvention, pay for castration or spaying, cat food and the veterinary costs to create a controlled colony, and then many of these neutered cats are poisoned by neighbors.

International pressure is needed so that the government of Spain makes it a crime to abandon, mistreat or poison the animals of the street. Then a campaign of education is needed so that people really know what it means to create a controlled colony ......... We also need prominent foreign veterinarians to help us educate Spaniards that cats are not plagues, the cats of a controlled colony do not spread diseases, and the cats only can carry fleas, they do not produce them.

Dear Sirs,

When I visited Spain I was horrified by the number of abandoned cats that are poisoned, abused and killed.

I could not understand how prosperous European cities in the 21st century are doing practically nothing to improve the situation of the street cats. What surprises me is that you know of the methods used by other European countries to deal with abandoned cats - the CONTROLLED COLONY (TNR- trap, neuter, return; veterinary control, correct feeding) but you do not consider putting these ideas into practice. It is unbelievable that a city council would rather eliminate a cat than have a managed colony. It is also abhorrent to think that the Spaniards are so ignorant and insensitive that they think that a controlled colony allows the reproduction of cats. And most incredible is public policy which punishes those who feed cats instead of the owners who abandon them and create the problem.

Please, avoid this senseless killing of animals! Help those who are trying to help the abandoned cats by creating CONTROLLED COLONIES and educating cities and towns to treat all animals humanely. When I return to Spain I hope to find cities which are working to improve this sad situation, instead of European metropolises that seem to be more like the third world.
